A design competition was held to create a new public area, named the Golden Square. It will replace the current car park in front of the Big Peg office block in Vyse Street and will provide a meeting place as well as an area for event management.

The Golden Square is being created as one of the first new projects in Birmingham City Council’s Big City Plan, which will see the city centre transformed over the coming years. The proposals for this new public square seek to create an exciting, iconic and inspiring space, which would act as the focal point to the Jewellery Quarter. It will be located in the centre of the historic quarter which is home to more than 1,500 businesses, 200 listed buildings and produces 40% of all the jewellery manufactured in UK each year. The Golden Square will provide a place for visitors and locals alike to meet, socialise and unwind, as well providing a public space for markets, exhibitions and events to take place.

Although Mobius did not win the competition, we are very proud of the design of our submission.
